Understanding Roller Shades - What You Need to Know Before You Buy

We’re saying goodbye to summer and that means our attention will shift back to the inside of our homes. All the jobs we put aside during the summer months are ready to be tackled and if one of those jobs is replacing your window coverings, this is for you. I recently wrote an entire post outlining everything you need to know about cell shades (read that post here). Now it’s time to do the deep dive on another popular option for windows, the roller shade.

What are Roller Shades?

Roller shades are a simple window covering that is composed of a single piece of fabric or vinyl that rolls up  and down. The fabric is attached to a hollow tube with brackets on the side to hold the roll in place. The shade can be attached either inside or outside of the window frame.

Why I Love Roller Shades

There are several reasons I love roller shades but their simplicity makes them a great option for someone looking at sleek window coverings that don’t require much maintenance. Here are a few reasons why I love roller shades:

1/ Light Control

Roller shades are available in so many different fabric and vinyl options which means you’ll always be able to control the amount of light that filters into the room. Blackout fabric can provide complete darkness in your space and this is a perfect option for anyone who wants complete darkness while sleeping.

2/ Sleek Design

When roller blinds are not in use they roll up into the frame and become almost invisible. They have one of the smallest profiles of any type of window shade which means they won’t be distracting or overwhelming on your windows.

3/ Low Maintenance

Due to the flat construction of a roller blind you’ll find less dust accumulating on them compared to blinds with slats. Depending on which type of fabric you select they can be wiped down with a damp cloth but otherwise no maintenance is required.

4/ Layers Easily

Since roller blinds have such a sleek profile, it’s easy to pair them with curtains or panels and combine functionality with aesthetics. It can sometimes feel too heavy to combine multiple types of window coverings but if that’s what you’re after you should consider roller shades.

5/ Privacy

Since there is such a vast array of materials to choose from you have complete control over how much privacy your shade provides. You can select the level of opacity that works for your space and take control of how your roller shade performs.

What to Consider When Buying Roller Shades

Aside from my interior design business I also own and operate a business selling and installing window coverings in Cranbrook and surrounding areas. I am often asked what needs to be considered when selecting roller shades and after many years in business these are the factors I think are the most important to consider:

Light Filtering

How much light do you want your shades to filter? This will depend on the room and the requirements of the space. If you’re installing blinds in a bedroom you may want to consider blackout material that will block out the light and allow you to sleep.

If your office window overlooks your neighbour’s home you might prefer a transparent fabric that will filter the light and obscure the view. The most important factors to consider are how much privacy you need as well as how much light you want to allow into your space.

Control Mechanism

Unlike the multiple options for control mechanism with cell shades, roller blinds traditionally use a bead chain to control the raising and lowering of the shade. There is a chain hold-down mechanism that attaches to the frame or wall to keep the chain secure and out of reach of small children.

In recent years we’ve seen roller shades manufactured with built-in cordless motorization which makes this safer and even more streamlined since there’s no visible chain.

Cordless Motorization

In recent years we’ve seen roller shades manufactured with cordless options. Here are a few of the various options available:

1/ The first option is a non-motorized version that uses an internal tension mechanism. The shade is manually operated by pulling down on the shade to lower it and pushing the shade up to raise it.

2/ A second option uses a rechargeable motorized wand to both raise and lower the shade.

3/ A third option uses a rechargeable lithium ion motor located inside the tube and the blind is operated by remote control or a bluetooth connection.

NOTE: Typically motorized roller shades will require a charge every 3-4 months depending on the usage and the size of the blind.

Roller shades can also be hardwired if you’re building a new home with high windows in a vaulted ceiling. There is no need for recharging with this option.

Fabric Options

Your design aesthetic and your style will guide you when it comes to selecting fabric for roller shades. If you tend towards a modern or transitional style you may prefer a simple neutral that works harmoniously with the colour of your window trim.

If you prefer a bolder design style you may want to select an accent colour or a strong texture that stands out and highlights the window. This is also a nice way to draw attention to a beautiful view outside your window.

Most importantly you’ll be considering the amount of light and privacy you want when selecting fabric options. There are fabric and vinyl options for every need and requirement.

Getting the Size Right

Roller shades can be customized to fit any window in your home with your choice of fabric or vinyl material. It’s always important to consult with a professional because we can help determine the best solution including where more than one roller blind might be more useful than a single shade.

Concerns Around Light

If you’re ordering blinds for a bedroom you may be concerned about light entering the space and that’s a valid concern. Light leak is common when a roller blind is installed on an inside mount (within the frame of your window) because in order to function properly there is a ¾” gap at the sides. This is necessary to help raise and lower the blind and avoid having the blind rubbing against the window frame.

If you want to ensure complete darkness, especially with blackout roller shades it’s best to install an outside mount where no light will enter the room.

Windows That Don’t Benefit From Roller Shades

Roller shades may not function well in bathrooms with lots of humidity because the moisture may affect the fabric and cause spots or warping in the fabric. Otherwise, roller shades will work well in the rest of your home.

Measuring and Installation

It’s so important that the measuring and installation of roll shade be done by a professional. If you accidentally measure incorrectly you may find yourself with a blind that can’t be installed or returned.

It’s always advisable to have an expert visit your home for a site measure and then return once the blinds have been manufactured and install them for you.

Cleaning and Care

Roller blinds are a low maintenance option that require very little to keep them looking brand new. Depending on the fabric you select, a gentle cleaning with a soft cloth will reduce dust build up. Since the surface of roller blinds is vertical without any slats it’s easy to keep these clean.

Working With Me

I’ve been installing roller shades and various other window coverings for over 6 years which means I’ve learned a ton and am constantly improving my business.

My current roller shade fabric library includes over a thousand different fabrics  including room darkening, translucent and sheer options. There are a variety of colours and textures and there are even a few fabrics offering a pattern for those who want to add some additional visual interest to their shades.

All the blinds that I specify are made in Medicine Hat in Alberta and the manufacturing time is approximately one month from the time the order is placed.

If you’re interested I’d be happy to book a consultation and help you decide which type of window covering is best for your space. I offer a 2-hour consultation and during this time we’ll discuss the best options for your space as well as fabric options and functional needs. I also take measurements in order to be able to provide you with the most accurate quote so you can decide whether you want to move ahead.
